About
While still in college, Barry Mathis decided to follow his passion and embark on a career in Architectural Design. He began as an associate with noted Residential Designer, John E. Popwell, in Americus and Albany, Georgia, where he worked on various projects in the Southern Vernacular and traditional residential styles.
He established his own firm in 1988. and for the past 32 years, he has worked closely with an array of clients on various residential, plantation, restoration, and commercial projects throughout the Southeast. He brings to his work an abiding passion for authenticity and detail, which results in built works that display careful attention to symmetry, proportion, and scale.
Mathis is a devout student and admirer of the works of the venerable “Georgia School” of classicists, — Neel Reid, Philip Shutze, Edward Vason Jones, and Jimmy Means. In the tradition of Jones and Means (who briefly practiced together in Albany in the 1950s), he never pursued a professional degree and instead, “learned by doing.”
He has moved and restored several homes by these noted architects, and his passion for Classical Architecture and “old-school” design influences his ongoing work. Completely self-taught, his practice focuses primarily on traditional residences, and though his work today sometimes includes larger scale projects, he truly enjoys working closely with clients on distinguished residential structures.
Barry Mathis’ designs are still carefully drawn by hand, in the old-school tradition of venerable architects, with meticulous attention to detail, millwork joinery, and authentic exterior facades. He also often oversees the home’s construction and interiors, with custom furniture, millwork, and lighting designs.
Mathis continues this passion for excellence in design for various clients in the Southeast, in Rural Township Development and conceptualization and design of Planned Communities. Usually beginning with the identification of appropriate property, Barry Mathis is intimately involved with every phase of concept, design, marketing, and construction of his projects.
He currently resides in Roswell, Georgia with his wife and two children and continues to enjoy time with friends and family in Americus and Sumter County Georgia.
